Braun Series Pulsonic Shaver System

I have accumulated quite a few 'shavers over the years, with the three most recent new models from Norelco, Braun and Panasonic. So, I decided to make a comparison, perhaps to help those who are debating between these high-end models.

But first we need to get a basic question of the way: you should not spend so much to get a good shave from an electric razor? Absolutely not. Lower-end models such as the Braun Series 5, 7000 and 8000 Series Norelco shavers ArcIV and Panasonic are great. What you get for the extra money is a slight improvement in his beard, a little design 'better, and a couple of bells and whistles in some useful way.

The quality of construction - all are very well put together. The Braun feels more substantial, the 3D feels more "plasticy".

Sound - 3D very quiet, Braun and Panasonic are much more "exciting", but not too strong.

Overall feel - for me, Braun feels the most comfortable to hold. Easy to grip even with wet hands. The Panasonic is in second place. The 3D is the most awkward feeling. It's not horrible, but not everything that is comfortable.

Dry shave: close - this is a difficult choice, with Braun and the Panasonic is providing very close shaves. The 3D does a good job, but my face does not feel as smooth as with the other.

Shaving Dry: Speed - the 3D is the clear winner here. Only through my beard, cuts, shaving with a total time of less than 3 min. The Panasonic is about 4 minutes for a good shave, the Braun watches in about 5 min.

Smoothing dry-neck - this is the most difficult for most razors, and all these models a few hairs left wandering here and there. The 3D is the best, but it comes at the expense of a certain irritation (see note below). Braun and Panasonic are about equal.

Dry shave: Comfort - Braun is the winner for me, followed by Panasonic. Zero redness on even the most sensitive (the jaw line and neck). The 3D has left me with some red spots on my neck. Nothing serious, but it is clearly a step below the other amenities on the counter.

Wet shave - this is limited to Panasonic and 3D. I'm not a big fan of wet shaving, but both do a very good job. The Panny does better with a very thin layer of gel-like cream, 3D works better with a heavier foam (I've gotten good results with Edge). Both came close shave, with a little 'sweeter than the Panny 3D. But, the 3D has done a better job on the neck and jaw line.

** Update: Just tried the new Remington Alphagel shaving cream and that works very well with both the Panny and Norelco. The scent is a bit 'heavy (menthol), but no-foam consistency is a perfect partner for a wet electric razor. Much better than any other shaving cream I've tried. I examined the Alphagel if you want more information.

Maneuverability - it is here that Braun really shines for me. I have a mustache, and beading with the Braun is a piece of cake. The 3D requires some practice, but can do a decent job. Far worse was the Panasonic - the big head makes it very difficult to create a clean edge around the `stash.

Automatic cleaning - I love the Braun cleaning station. Works well, cleans well, and the razor-out lemon fresh. The cleaning station Panasonic is OK, but is stronger, it takes longer, and the aqueous cleaning solution is not as effective. I can not comment on the station since the 3D model I bought did not come with it.

Manual cleaning - both the Panasonic and 3D are very easy to clean manually. It really is not necessary station car wash (even if it is useful for the storage for the Panny). The cutters are removable from the 3D (unlike the Arcitec models) for cleaner every so often. Braun can be cleaned with water, but it's hard to get very clean because the cutter block is a single unit.

I could say much more about these razors, but this review is already too long. If I had to pick just one, I'd go with the Braun. While not perfect, it excels in many areas and he feels the best. It also offers three settings (gentle, normal and intensive) that vary the speed of the cut, a characteristic of the other two are missing. I find it very useful. In addition, the heads of parts are readily available and frequently discounted (as are the cleaning cartridges). But the 3D and Panasonic are very good too razors and get the job done. If you're willing to spend the money, one of these would be a good choice.

Note: I have the Braun 790cc-4 since I was able to do it at a fantastic price (on another site - sorry Amazon!) On Black Friday. But, in the normal price, the 760 is cheaper and a better value. They work the same way, with differences limited to the color of the kind of razor, indications on the handle, and the fact that the 760 does not have the "Quick Clean" in the cleaning station. None of these are really important, so if you go with the Braun, choose the one that is more convenient.

But, we must learn to properly use an electric razor to get a good shave. Some quick tips:

1) Do not press too hard - use a touch easier. If the heads are always hot or warm, you are pressing too hard.
2) Shave against the grain when using a sheet of paper, shaving in a circular motion when using a rotary.
3) Stretch the skin taut when shaving neck
4) Wait at least an hour after getting up before shaving (face, we all become a little 'bloated when sleeping).

First of all, this is a great product, but do not want to spend time reviewing the great things about this product because I feel that there are many other reviews that have already done. Here are some things I've found that I thought would be helpful to others:

1) In the "most helpful critical review" is listed that the rectangular chrome handles are a pain to deal with. This almost forced me not to buy this product. However, after trying the DB, I have not found much more than a nuisance. The "square" handles are almost round with a pinch of "rectangulariness" if you will. Not much of a hassle for me, but some thick cloth tape should fix the problem if your hands are sensitive.

2) To those who do not want to buy the stand $ 150, I discovered that instead of taking the DB from the floor, you can simply use the shipping boxes as a personal stand. Just turn the foam and cut the top cover of the window and enter the DB inside the box and got stuck. DBs are still a bit 'low, but it is better to collect them from the ground.

3) If you have a problem with a DB that does not fall within the base evenly, the dials are locked, and one of the dishes do not attach the DB, do not send in the DB to the manufacturer just yet (I had this occur me today). After some experimentation, I finally realized that all I had to do was remove the DB from the base and remove the plates from the base to the base has been completely emptied. Then, with the base emptied at the rear of the base within the DB (no plates remaining on the floor). You should be able to switch the rear of the quadrants of £ 10 with plates coming out from the DB. Coleman Instant 14- by 10- Foot 8- Person Two Room Tent

I used to own an 8-man tent, Coleman was almost as big as this: Old tent was 14 X 9, while it is 14 X 10. The blind old man took me 30-40 minutes to get to me and I was tired at the end of it.

Instant new Coleman tent, it took me two minutes to get from me (I took my time) and when I was done, I was there for a few minutes will not believe how easy it was! I am almost 6 feet tall and could go around the entire tent without ducking. There was a lot of ventilation because of the two large doors and wider windows.

The tent material is robust and well sealed. The tent poles extended and locked into place with ease.

The curtain has come down as easily as they went up. Hardest part was coming back in the bag it came in but that is something you get to the bottom of each tent.

The only thing that probably do without is the partition panel that hangs in the center of the tent, I do not want to break the roominess of this tent!

In conclusion I would just say that I love camping with all my heart and I would give up every piece of camping equipment I have ever owned in order to have this tent!

I read lots of reviews for rafts / inflatables before choosing the 4 sailor. I purchased the motor mount and a Minn Kota 30 pounds thrust trolling motor to go with him. I was looking for a boat that would be fine with my boyfriend, large dog and myself in it. We took the boat out today and had a blast on the lake and moved well even though it was windy. It 'very comfortable and sturdy. I am a man 225 pounds and stood up well in the boat. The material looks quite heavy and durable. I was worried a bit 'of my dog's claws tearing a hole in the side but at the end of the day had gone in and out, and not a scratch on the boat. I recommend this boat to anyone looking to go out to sea and relax. Two people lying with plenty of space for a dog of good size in the middle and a cooler is great. The only things I would recommend would be to add a trolling motor to handle exstension and some sort of cushions to lean back. The engine sits a little 'far away and can get uncomfortable constantly reaching back for drive. As soon as we got home I ordered the extension so the next time I will be very comforatable. Someone said it's like a toy or tears easily, but I do not know why. It looks like a raft, we can say that e is a material often has a built in hard and hard floor. Not much else to say. Hope this helps.

Coleman got it right this time. The handle is substantial and remains cold. The handle also facilitates pressing the lighter without reinforcements against the hot metal. The curve, sealed design eliminates sharp edges, and makes cleaning easier. Burners spacious allowed us to use our 9 "frying pan over a single burner, with the wind shields up, and still have space around it (we could use a frying pan slightly larger).

Boiled water reasonably quickly.

The piezoelectric ignition worked fine. Just keep clicking it until you see the flame (hard to do in bright light) or feel the heat.

This is our first experience with propane. PROS: clean and warm. Unlike gasoline stoves, propane does not dirty the bottom of your pots and pans. It does not have the smell and mess of gasoline stoves. CONS: invisible flame in daylight. I can not say if the flame is over or decrease in the bottom of the pot. The flame may actually be too hot. Boil the water with a full flame (I think the burner on the right is a bit 'hotter than the left). But frying pancakes over the fire as low as possible, and keep an eye on it. A flame so hot it can be more that can discolor the metal, or reduce oil to an oven with rubber.

This stove made our recent camping trip a real pleasure.

I always wanted to dress up as Leia and clubs are always packed during Halloween, at least the clothes less heat you feel.

I ordered the XS. I'm 5'2 and have a small frame, a bust of 32 and 30 'around the hips which is where I put the skirt skirt.the comes right on the ground, the waist fits fine, the shorts are a bit long, but with a little rouching fit well. the skirt covers more in front of what is shown in the picture, if you want it to look like the photo, you can always pin.

top ties behind the neck and has velcro around the back. "metal" details of the costumes are made of rubber and the smell is very strong. details at the top of the bra is a little different from the picture, and there's a part that kind of sticks, I'll have to cut and paste it so it looks more like a snake. It also circles around the waist are a little loose and may need an adjustment to not stand out.

chocker the bracelet and are also made of rubber, are linked with velcro, the chain is not included.

hair extensions are two pieces of rubber that are stitched to hair pins and fit very well though it might get a little head that you can always pinpoint.

the colors are a little off on the image. the skirt is actually a deeper shade of red, a sort of burgundy. bra top is dark gray and the "metals" are more on the side of copper than gold.

the dress is wonderful, very little work to do to make it perfect. overall I'm very happy with it:)

I've had my Galaxy S (or "Captivate") phone a year, yet today I am enjoying very much. I will take a little time here to separate the good from the Captivate that is specific to the phone, compared to what is great about a Droid-based smartphone in particular.

First, the Android OS is really nice. The top-level screen can have 5 pages of what you want and the applications page superbly organized separately installed applications, to page through them as well. If you are not familiar with this concept, think of the top-level screen as something like the Windows or Mac desktop and the application area as being similar to the Start Menu / Launch Bar OS of your favorite team.

Best of Captivate is the hardware: the screen actually takes up almost the entire face of the phone, and is alive, colorful and bright. The battery cover is a spot of one to two slides that makes it easy to access without being the first thing to fall if you drop the phone. 1 GHz processor inside the phone makes applications faster, and even proves to be quite flexible about the use of data, easy to hold on to my favorite Wi-Fi networks when I'm in range, then switch seamlessly my data network when "I'm not.

Then there are the good things in Captivate: Calls are clear, I have received strong and clean, even when I notice a drop in bars and on those rare occasions I spend a dead zone, apparently to try their better hold on to the call ... I can not explain the technical details, just the gut feeling I have when I've driven or walked through areas that usually give me trouble on any phone and against all odds to stay connected (my office, example, faces a wall of rock that blocks further on top of the building). One complaint about this phone (and many smart phones) is discharging the battery, but I think that is manageable, if you choose to use the toolbar energy (built-in and easy to add) and Advanced Task Killer application (a separate download, and a must for any owner of a smartphone), which can be 2 or 3 days on a single charge. Usually it is easier to make matters worse, the end of the day or leave it plugged in when I'm not going to use it for a while. While Captivate seems very wide, it is also very thin and therefore light is amazing. I added the carbon fiber case hard on the outside and still weighs significantly less than an iPhone 4.

Using Captivate is pretty simple: the connection port for the charger or data cable are one and the same: a "micro" USB connector with a small sliding door to keep dirt out. I prefer this to the removable plastic tab that usually comes in handy if you're not careful. The charger that comes with the phone also also appears in a data cable, allowing you to separate the tooth socket and connect to the computer. Finally, the navigation buttons are only four points touch at the bottom of the screen, a slide rocker on the left side of the phone (by volume) and a release button on the right. I've heard people say that it is hard to tweak a button on one hand inadvertently hit the other (for example, lowering the volume when you go to unlock the phone), but I have not had this problem.

More information about the operating system: using Android 2.1 (FROYO now), I am discovering neat little features that I like. For example, some funds are interactive touch screen. When I'm playing music, if I have to pause, I have to unlock the phone, a small CD logo appears at the top with the controls to pause / next / back. The "Swype" feature of the operating system is extremely sensitive. I have to adjust any of this - the sensitivity really seems to strike a balance between "must grind for an answer" and "breathed on it and accidentally deleted something." Unlock your phone needs a touch of the button and pass along a touch screen. Even the inclination - a feature that began to bother me on my Nokia phone - it appears that both are quick to respond and easier to correct if not intended to rotate the screen. The 2.2 update went Android operating system a few months ago and has been a nice series of subtle ways the features are better - for example, it is now easier to manage the connection to a PC.

As much as I enjoy this phone, not everything is perfect. The buttons sometimes do not respond correctly. Sometimes I have to click twice, and sometimes they try to hit 'back' and accidentally hit "enter" instead. I'm not sure how much of what is in programming, hardware, or my fingers thick. The search window is extremely useful, but not always part of the search correctly. For example, I could be an application that has a long list of items on the screen, and the search will expand the list directly to the issue I'm looking for ... and then another application of the search could launch a web browser and search on the Internet that I have written in. I have not really learned a good way to scroll through a screen of time: often I have to just film down again and again until you get to where I go. And probably the most annoying feature is the interface of the current call. I have not taken that final step to enable voice calls from my list of favorites, so when I manually punch in my contacts or favorites to find someone to call, which seems to require more steps than it should make a call: find contact, tap a photo, press the "phone" icon, if you have two numbers associated with them have to specify that, then you get to take advantage of "calling."

There have been some complaints about the fact that the camera lacks flash. It's a shame that this feature is not present, but other than that I have to say the photos I've taken with the phone have been excellent, better than the first digital camera I bought years ago and certainly better than the last phone had which had a flash. Phone interface is dirt simple, and can even lock on standby, in case you want to eat out for a bit, but be ready to shoot with a touch of unlock button. Application Gallery Android operating system makes quick work of the two groups in the organization of my photos and it's easy to flip through: clean thumbnails at a glance tell me what collection of images I watching, so you can select the group I want to see.

If you're in the market for a smartphone and would like to test the operating system Droid, I can not say enough about Captivate. It has a bright screen, the fast hardware and operating system is running quite well. Despite its flaws, this is a great smartphone excellent, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

Helpful Hint: When connected to a computer, it is not obvious how to work and a lot of people are having problems. When connecting the cable, the "smart phone (Kies)" option does not appear to work. Instead, you have to choose "USB (Mass Storage )"... then do not already have your phone files and folders appear in Windows - Windows 7, which only tell Captivate Samsung has been connected to the computer, but can not "see." You have to take an additional step: from the main screen, access the menu. You will see "USB connected" on the notification list. Tap that and you get a request to "mount" the phone. Upon doing this, everything works: The phone creates two units (one for phone memory, one for the memory card) and can access files and folders as is done in a USB "thumb" drive .

So far, so good enough, with the Boulevard for us. We chose this location based on CR ratings, reviews Baby Bargains and the fact that it was easy to adjust the straps for tightness and height.Our son seems very comfortable seat, and naps in it without problems. However, the seat has some disadvantages that should not exist in reality, considering its exorbitant price.

- The seat is easy to install, but very heavy and very large. We have a 2010 Toyota Rav-4, but still think that the seat is too large. It fits, but I do not think we will be able to use the same model of a second seat in our smallest sedan.

- The straps twist CONSTANTLY that, once again, should not be a problem since it was a $ 300 car seat. Seriously, could not fix the problem with a small part of my purchase price? They are also difficult to keep out of the way when you set up little guy in the seat, so I have to dig out from under him (before untwisting them) almost every time. They have included Velcro straps and the seat to try to help with this problem, but is basically useless.

- I do not know whether it is due to the overall size of the seat or if it's just a scourge of the rear seats, but it is inconvenient to get our son in and out of the seat facing the rear. Even at 10 months and hates to get out of the office, even if it's okay once it's inside and buckles. I almost long arm to hold him, him down and then around the seat and lean into the car to fix the wiring.Super annoying.

- I have not tried to remove the seat fabric for cleaning (and after reading some of the other reviews, are not eager to try it), but the buckle is a pain in the neck than to clean it if anything goes. Again, this might be the case with any site, but after spending 20 minutes trying to scrape spit-up, I want to wear a bib in the car my son suffered.

All that being said, I'm pretty happy with the seat and since our son is very high (almost 34 inches to 10 months), we needed larger premises to accommodate the rear facing to keep it as long as possible, so this was probably our best bet. Read More...

on the recommendation of my optometrist. I had the dryness and
itching from time to time. The switch definitely helped. The
lenses are very comfortable Clear Care Cleaning &
Disinfecting Solution when inserted in the morning, no
clarification is necessary. The lenses stay fresh throughout the
month of their destiny.

Supposedly, peroxide cleaning is recommended for silicone
hydrogel contact most recent, as they absorb the chemicals in the
other solutions that can cause a reaction. In the peroxide-type
systems, after neutralization to stay with a balanced salt
solution, without preservatives, it is much easier on the eyes.

It’s amazing how many people do not read the instructions and
ignoring warnings to get Opti Free Replenish Contact Lens
Solution 10 Ounce Bottles In 2 Count Boxes ALL the packaging
without neutralizing the peroxide in your eyes, and then blame
the manufacturers and give negative comments.

As long as you follow the instructions you will be satisfied with

I use it to make 2 cups or containers filled. I have used many different machines over 15 years of coffee consumption (and therefore the preparation of coffee) per day and have absolutely no complaints about this machine. I would like to address the complaints here for people to buy a coffee maker.

RE: The problem of leakage reported. This is due to overfilling. Strathwood furniture all was well packed and arrived in a big box truck to my house. This set is like tinker toys for adults and you have to put together. all the pieces were wrapped well and scratches. The only drawback that I was missing 2 washers and a chair leg had a hole is missing, and one leg drills have not been found to allow the bolt in i have a drill in hand and some patience, and I would not send back. pads are comfortable chairs and 4 matching pillows are fine. for the money this is a good set, but I would not buy another game to put together.

I had read reviews on the ordered set and that was kind of hesistant because it sounded like everyone was struggling for its creation. But we liked the style and decided to sort the Moorean deep seating. My husband was out of town and we were having a party weekend came, but luckily my 19 year old son was home from college for the summer and I tried to say it would be difficult and takes two people to put together, and I had to leave town, but here it did by itself in about 4-5 hours and said it was not a problem at all. And I was out of town when together. So needless to say we're enjoying it!

We did a lot of searching before purchasing this set and love it! Arrived very quickly and is very good quality. The set is very strong and does not seem to move the dampers to sit / stand. We have a rug under our set, so that the pieces do not move well (not sure if they would without the mat). The cushions are a bit hard, but I think it will soften with use / time / warmer climate. I'd recommend this game.

โครงการ “ผจญภัย หัวใจสีเขียว” สนุก มันส์ ฮา ท้า ความแกร่ง เป็นโครงการที่การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทยร่วมมือกับสำนักงานส่งเสริมการ ท่องเที่ยวทหารบก จัดโครงการดีๆ เพื่อสร้างความรู้จักเกี่ยวกับแหล่งท่องเที่ยวในค่ายทหารให้เกิดขึ้นในสังคม วงกว้าง รวมทั้งยังเป็นการดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งชาวไทย และชาวต่างประเทศ ให้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมภายในค่ายทหาร ที่ผ่านมาการจัดแข่งขันได้จัดขึ้นที่โรงเรียนนายร้อย จปร จ.นครนายก. ,อ่างเก็บน้ำห้วยตึงเฒ่า จ.เชียงใหม่ และค่ายสุรนารี จ.นครราชสีมา เป็นต้น โดยในแต่ละค่ายมีการจัดแข่งขันที่แตกต่างกันออกไปตามสภาพแวดล้อมอย่างภูเขา แหล่งน้ำ หน้าผาสูง เพื่อให้ผู้เข้าร่วมแข่งขันได้ผจญภัย ท้าทายอย่างเต็มที่ นอกจากสถานที่แล้วกิจกรรมสำหรับการแข่งขันในแต่ละสนาม ได้ถูกออกแบบมาเพื่อการผจญภัย เพิ่มความสนุกสนาน โดยเน้นให้รู้จักการทำงานร่วมกัน คอยดูแลซึ่งกันและกันและช่วยเหลือกันไปตลอดเส้นทางการแข่งขัน ใครที่ชื่นชอบการท่องเที่ยวเชิงผจญภัยหรือกีฬาแบบ Adventure พลาดไม่ได้

กิจกรรมผจญภัยหัวใจสีเขียว สนุก มันส์ ฮา ท้าความแกร่ง เป็นอีกหนึ่งกิจกรรมที่น่า สนใจสำหรับผู้ที่ชื่นชอบการท่องเที่ยวแนวผจญภัยและท่องเที่ยวในเขตทหาร ซึ่งกิจกรรมส่วนใหญ่ที่ใช้ในการแข่งขันจะเป็นกิจกรรมที่ทหารใช้ฝึกฝนร่างกาย ทั้งสิ้น เช่น ยิงปืน ที่มีให้เลือก ทั้งปืนลูกโม่,ปืนยาว ตามความถนัดของแต่ละคน เพื่อฝึกทักษะและสมาธิของผู้ร่วมแข่งขันก่อนกลับยังได้เอาผลงานความแม่นของ ตัวเองกลับไปอวดคนที่บ้านให้ได้ชื่นชมกัน แต่ถ้าใครที่ชื่นชอบกีฬาแนวต่อสู้แข่งขัน ต้องลองเพ้นท์บอล กีฬาที่ฝึกความแข็งแกร่งของร่างกาย ที่จำลองสนามรบขนาดย่อม มีที่กำบังเป็นต้นไม้ รถถังหรือจะเป็นบังเกอร์ที่ใช้อิฐมอญวางเรียงตั้งสูงเท่าตัวคนให้ได้แอบบัง กระสุนจากฝ่ายตรงข้าม สำหรับเรื่องความปลอดภัยทางค่ายทหารได้ให้ความสำคัญเป็นอับดับแรกๆ เพื่อคอยดูแลความปลอดภัยของผู้เล่นได้เล่นอย่างถูกกฎและสนุกอย่างเต็มที่ โดยก่อนเล่นผู้เล่นทั้ง 2 ฝ่ายจะต้องมีการรับฟังกฏกติกามารยาทของการเล่นจากผู้ฝึกก่อน จากนั้นผู้เล่นทุกคนจะเปลี่ยนชุดและได้รับอุปกรณ์ครบมือ เช่น หน้ากาก , กระสุน , ผ้าผูกคอสีแดงหรือน้ำเงินเพื่อเป็นการแบ่งแยกทีมแต่ละทีมให้ดูชัดเจนยิ่งจาก นั้นก็เริ่มลุยกันได้ตามกฏกติกา ข้อห้ามที่สำคัญของผู้เล่นที่ต้องปฎิบัติตามอย่างเคร่งคัดคือห้ามยิงระยะกระ ชันชิดซึ่งผู้ฝึกจะแจ้งให้ทราบว่าประมาณ 5 เมตรถือว่าไม่ปลอดภัย เพราะอาจทำให้ได้รับอันตรายจากวิถีกระสุนได้ เสร็จสิ้นความสนุกที่เพ้นท์บอลแล้วใครที่ที่กลัวความสูงแต่ต้องการเพิ่มรส ชาติของชีวิต ต้องรีบจับจอง การเล่นที่ท้าความกล้าเฉพาะบุคคลจริงๆ อย่างเลื่อนข้ามลำน้ำ ซึ่งวิธีการเล่นต้องปีนขึ้นบนหอกระโดดสูง มีเจ้าหน้าที่ช่วยใส่อุปกรณ์ความปลอดภัยและอุปกรณ์คือลูกโป่งใส่น้ำ 1 ลูก ก่อนที่เจ้าหน้าที่จะปล่อยผู้เล่นให้ลอยละล่องตามสลิงลงน้ำโดยมีห่วงยางลอย น้ำไว้ให้ผู้เล่นได้โยนลูกโป่งลงในห่วงยาง เคล็ดลับอยู่ที่การทรงตัวให้พอดีไปการไหลลงตามสลิง เลื่อนข้ามลำน้ำเป็นการฝึกความแม่นยำและความอดทนร่างกายยังได้ความมันส์แบบ เสียว ๆ อีกด้วย จากความสนุกจากฐานต่าง ๆ แล้วใครที่มีพลังเหลืออยู่ให้จับคู่บัดดี้เริ่มต้นความมันส์กับฐานวัดใจ ให้ได้ลุ้น กลิ้ง วิ่ง ป่ายปีน และกระโดดได้เหงื่อได้อีกฐานหนึ่งเช่นกัน โดยฐานนี้เป็นฝึกความแข็งแกร่งของร่างกาย ความอดทน การช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน เช่น การข้ามเครื่องกีดขวาง ,ทดสอบกำลังใจ

Trend points to shorter travel trips

The trend of Thai people travelling inside the country points to short trips rather than long-distance travel, while the revenue from domestic travel is expected to increase one percent from last year to 370,000 million baht in 2007.

According to Kasikorn Research Centre, a major factor in this change of Thai travelling habit was the higher cost of fuel that made people think twice before planing their trips.

Bangkokians, who constitute a major group of these travellers, trend to focus more on destinations not far from their homes such as to the east and the central region where the number of travellers increased 28.1 percent and 26 percent respectively.

The centre predicted the number of domestic travellers to rise three percent this year from 2006 generating some 370,000 million baht, an increase of one percent from last year.

The centre suggested that there should be campaigns to encourage travellers to spend more days in places they visit by promoting more activities, encouraging people to travel during weekdays and also promote trips for making-merit or cultural tours which is a hot trend among Thais people today.

Phuket attraction

Phuket has just had its new tourism attraction opened next to Sarasin Bridge that links Phangnga and Phuket.

Called Phuket Gateway, it was built on 25 rai of land by the Provincial Administration Organisation with a budget of 50 million baht. It is a rest area and an information centre for visitors. It also has a library with Internet, restaurants and OTOP shops selling souvenirs.

Hi-tech travel assist

ESRI (Thailand) has launched Garmin Nuvi 200, an entry-level GPS (global positioning system) supporting Thai language.

The hand-held personal travel assistance comes with a touch screen with two-or-three dimensional maps supporting JPEG picture viewing. It can guide a driver turn-by-turn by voice.

Other features include a world travel clock, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator, an anti-theft feature and supports SD cards and bluetooth connection.

The price is at 14,700 baht and it at available in Se-Ed bookstores and IT superstores.

'Conde Nast' survey

Thailand has been voted as the third favourite country to travel to by some 30,000 readers of Conde Nast Traveler, a US magazine, during its 10th annual awards that honour most popular destinations around the world.

The 2007 Conde' Nast Traveller Readers' Travel Awards honour the best in the world in categories of hotels, airlines, islands, tour operators, spas, cruise lines, cities and countries.

Last year, Thailand was ranked in seventh place by its worldwide readers and this year it climbed to third, after India and Italy. In fourth and fifth place were Australia and New Zealand respectively.

India was also voted as top in culture, value of money and variety of attractions, while Thailand top scored for its friendliness. New Zealand scored highly for scenery and Italy for the best food and climate in the world.

The Maldives was once again the readers' number one island. Sydney was adjudged the favourite city and London best for its restaurants, nightlife and entertainment.

Outbound travel rises

MasterCard predicts steady growth of outbound travellers across the Asia-Pacific region in the second half of this year.

Dr Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, economic advisor to MasterCard, cited robust economy which in turn has supported the tourism industry in the region as the reason.

"This positive forecast for outbound travel corresponds with increasing personal disposable income and availability of low cost travel options, which has made travel accessible to not just the mass affluent but the expanding middle class in Asia-Pacific," he noted.

Released twice a year, the survey titled "MasterIndex of Travel" covered 5,407 participants from 13 countries including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Outbound travel from South Korea is expected to show a significant leap to 12.5 percent, with 7.1 million Koreans expected to travel for work and leisure. Other markets anticipating an increase in year-on-year growth include the Philippines (5.7 percent), Australia and Indonesia (5.6 percent), Hong Kong (4.9 percent) and New Zealand (2.1 percent).

However, the survey found a slowdown in the rate of growth for outbound travel from China, Japan, Thailand and Singapore.

Malaysia and Taiwan are expected to power ahead in the number of outbound travellers. Over 23.8 million outbound visits are expected to be made by Malaysians for work and leisure in the next six months.

The most popular ski resort town in Colorado is Aspen. If you'd rather not ski a challenging run, there are several easy runs which provide a relaxing day meandering down the slopes. Spread out over 2.2 million acres, this national park is considered one of the premier wilderness areas in the United States. Here, you will enjoy magnificent scenery and a large variety of birds and wildlife. The more than 1,100 miles of trails makes this the perfect area for hiking enthusiasts.

Even with trails that are simple to reach and well-groomed, and you have park rangers watching over you, you still have to be aware of weather that can change in an instant, rocks that may roll and hurt you, and unpredictable animals. It’s imperative that you respect the “wilderness” and follow the park’s rules. Knowing about the potential risks and sticking to the guidelines, should have you all set to face any situation you might encounter in the park.

Day hiking is a popular activity in Yellowstone Park and with such an abundance of trail choices, the ideal way to spend the day. To get started, stop by the ranger station where you can pick up a map and other important information. The ranger will go over specific aspects of the park with you to include being alert for bears, sudden storms, fires, and to always carry a first aid kit, sunscreen, raincoat, and insect repellent with you.

In Yellowstone Park you won’t need to apply for a hiking permit. There are some national parks where you must do so. As you explore the trails, you may end up in remote regions of the park. Some of the trails are easy hiking and not at all steep. Others will be more challenging. Give yourself a heads-up on weather and trails before you start that hike.

So you’ve decided to organize a multi-day river trip with some friends. You’ve all decided what stretch of river you’ll be doing. So what’s next? The key to any successful river trip is in the pre-trip planning. The more you can do ahead of time, the smoother the trip will go, and the more time you will have in camp to explore or relax. After all, this is why you are going on the trip.

There are lots of aspects to the pre-planning. And since you are going with a group of friends, not a guide service someone has to do the job of the guide service. However, this doesn’t mean that one person needs to be saddled with the whole job. Instead use the strengths of group and divide and conquer. Pick one or two people with the most familiarity or the most experience to be your group leaders. These people are then responsible for planning the trip itself. They are responsible for getting the maps, planning put ins and take outs, transportation, campsites, number of miles traveled per day, etc. They need to make sure you have all the permits necessary for using land along the river’s edge. The trip leaders also need to check on current river conditions, especially any rapids. It’s always a good idea to contact state and federal agencies that manage land along the river corridor. They often have free maps and information for the public. They’ll need to check with any private land owners as well. Local knowledge is also very valuable. Local outfitters will have the most current information on river conditions, and will know land ownership along the river.

You will need a gear coordinator. Someone in the group needs to take charge of getting together a list of what gear the group has collectively, and make sure you have everything you need without over doing it! The gear coordinator needs to make sure there are enough boats for the group size as well as personal floatation devices for all. Camp equipment should include the camp kitchen, tents, group shelters etc. Some river trips require you to pack out all human waste, so a camp latrine will be part of your gear list. Safety equipment is a must and should include throw bags, bow lines, and hardware such as carabineers at a minimum. There should be a good first aid kit in at least one of the boats and some sort of communication device (i.e. VHF radio, cell phone, sat phone, etc.).

There should be a safety coordinator in the group as well. This person will work with the gear coordinator to make sure the safety equipment is in working order and that at least a couple of people in the group know how to use it. If only one person knows how to use rescue throw bags and that person is the one needing to be rescued, you’re in trouble. The safety coordinator will also develop standard hand or whistle signals so that you can communicate quickly between boats. This really needs to be established before the trip begins, not when you’re in the middle of the big rapids and voices are lost in the roar of the river.

And finally you’ll want a camp chef. This person is not necessarily in charge of all the cooking. Rather they are in charge of planning the menu, buying food, and packing it for the trip. They are also in charge of developing the sign up sheet for kitchen duties. The camp chef will poll the group for food likes and dislikes, food allergies and any budget concerns. Also there may be some members of your group that have food to donate to the trip. Once the information is gathered the chef can plan a menu that will work well on the river. The chef should come up with an estimated budget and present it to the group before finalizing the menu.

Packing food is really important, especially in warm weather when spoilage is a concern. Pack one cooler for each day on the river with dinner on the bottom and breakfast on top of the cooler. The most perishable foods should be used first, and the least perishable foods used toward the end of a trip. Each cooler should be labeled and sealed. Let the group know that it is taboo to open any cooler before the day it is labeled for. This will insure that the cold stays in as long as possible. You should pack lunch coolers separately. Lunch coolers will contain 2-3 days worth of lunches as well as snack foods while on the river. Also, when packing the coolers into rafts, try to keep the lunch coolers accessible. You don’t want to have to unpack the whole boat when you stop for lunch.

With a little pre-planning and division of labor you can plan a trip that you and your friends will remember for a lifetime. You’ll be talking about the river trip for years!

A Hiking Guide to Easter Island

Ask me which Pacific island has the most to offer hikers and I'll probably answer Easter Island. Here on an island 11 km wide and 23 km long you'll find nearly a thousand ancient Polynesian statues strewn along a powerfully beautiful coastline or littering the slopes of an extinct volcano.

The legends of Easter Island have been recounted many times. What's less known is that the island's assorted wonders are easily accessible on foot from the comfort of the only settlement, Hanga Roa. Before setting out see the sights, however, visit the excellent archaeological museum next to Ahu Tahai on the north side of town (the term "ahu" refers to an ancient stone platform). Aside from the exhibits, the museum has maps which can help you plan your trip. On online map is available at http://www.mapsouthpacific.com/easter_island/

The first morning after arrival, I suggest you climb Easter Island's most spectacular volcano, Rano Kau, where Orongo, a major archaeological site, sits on the crater's rim. But rather than marching straight up the main road to the crater, look for the unmarked shortcut trail off a driveway to the right just past the forestry station south of town. It takes under two hours to cover the six km from Hanga Roa to Orongo, but bring along a picnic lunch and make a day of it. (If climbing a 316-meter hill sounds daunting, you can take a taxi to the summit for around US$6 and easily walk back later in the day.) Once on top, you'll find hiking down into the colourful crater presents no difficulty. It may also look easy to go right around the crater rim, but only do so if you're a very experienced hiker and have a companion along as shear 250-meter cliffs drop into the sea from the ridge.

Another day, rise early and take a taxi to lovely Anakena Beach at the end of the paved road on the north side of the island (you should pay under US$10 for the 20 km). A few of the famous Easter Island statues have been restored at Anakena and you could go for a swim, although the main reason you've come is the chance to trek back to Hanga Roa around the road-free northwest corner of the island. You'll pass numerous abandoned statues lying facedown where they fell, and the only living creatures you're unlikely to encounter are the small brown hawks which will watch you intently from perches on nearby rocks. If you keep moving, you'll arrive back in town in five or six hours (but take adequate food, water, and sunscreen). This is probably the finest coastal walk in the South Pacific.

Almost as good is the hike along the south coast, although you're bound to run into other tourists here as a paved highway follows the shore. Begin early and catch a taxi to Rano Raraku, the stone quarry where all of the island's statues were born. This is easily the island's most spectacular sight with 397 statues in various stages of completion lying scattered around the crater. And each day large tour groups come to Rano Raraku to sightsee and have lunch. However, if you arrive before 9 am, you'll have the site to yourself for a few hours. When you see the first tour buses headed your way, hike down to Ahu Tongariki on the coast, where 15 massive statues were reerected in 1994. From here, just start walking back toward Hanga Roa (20 km) along the south coast. You'll pass many fallen statues and enjoy some superb scenery. Whenever you get tired, simply go up onto the highway and stick out your thumb and you'll be back in town in a jiffy.

An outstanding 13-km walk begins at the museum and follows the west coast five km north to Ahu Tepeu. As elsewhere, keep your eyes pealed for banana trees growing out of the barren rocks as these often indicate caves you can explore. Inland from Ahu Tepeu is one of the island's most photographed sites, Ahu Akivi, with seven statues restored in 1960. From here an interior farm road runs straight back to town (study the maps at the museum carefully, as you'll go far out of your way if you choose the wrong road here).

A shorter hike takes you up Puna Pau, a smaller crater which provided stone for the red topknots that originally crowned the island's statues. There's a great view of Hanga Roa from the three crosses on an adjacent hill and you can easily do it all in half a day. A different walk takes you right around the 3,353-meter airport runway, which crosses the island just south of town. Near the east end of the runway is Ahu Vinapu with perfectly fitted monolithic stonework bearing an uncanny resemblance to similar constructions in Peru.

Easter Island's moderate climate and scant vegetation make for easy cross country hiking, and you won't find yourself blocked by fences and private property signs very often. You could also tour the island by mountain bike, available from several locations at US$10 a day. If you surf or scuba dive, there are many opportunities here. A minimum of five days are needed to see the main sights of Easter Island, and two weeks would be far better. The variety of things to see and do will surprise you, and you'll be blessed with some unforgettable memories.

Amazing Trek Across TIbet!

Today Bookpleasures and Sketchandtravel are pleased to have as our guest, Brandon Wilson, author of Yak Butter Blues.

In 1992, Brandon and his wife Cheryl travelled 40 days from early October to the end of November in 1992 over 1000 kilometers travelling along the ancient pilgrimage route across Tibet. Evidently, they were one of the first Western couples to trek this ancient route alongside, by the way, a horse they named Sadhu.

Good day Brandon and thank you for accepting our invitation to be interviewed.

Norm: Brandon, could you tell our readers something about yourself and your wife Cheryl, and why did you want to trek across Tibet and did you ever had any fears prior to your journey?

Brandon: Tashi delek, Norm! We had been travelling for years as budget travelers, traveling light, with only a backpack to sustain us for months on end. In the process, we'd made our requisite trip around the world for a year and had seen many of civilization's greatest achievements. We'd also traveled overland across Africa for nine months (which is the subject of my book to be released in 2005, Dead Men Don't Leave Tips.) So, we were ready for a more intense experience something more in line with that of the great explorers.

Our decision to attempt to trek from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu, Nepal sprung from the notion that this was the ultimate adventure. Everyone grew up with the legend of a Shangri-La, that fanciful place from James Hilton's Lost Horizon. The more that I read about Tibet, the more I was fascinated by its remoteness, inaccessibility, and its exotic reputation.

Then, as luck would have it, we were told several times that this trek had never been done by a Western couple and that it was "impossible!" That ultimately sealed our fate.

As far as "fears" prior to the journey, first, I had real concerns that we wouldn't be allowed into Tibet as independent travelers, since the border had been closed to them for many years. A Chinese organized group tour was simply out of the question for us.

Then, although we were assured the trip was "impossible" due to lack of food, water, accommodations, and maps, personally I was more worried about the weather. Knowing the severity of weather conditions in the Himalayas, would we be able to reach the lower altitudes of Nepal in time before the roads closed, stranding us until May's thaw?

Finally, I must admit that I was also wary about the reaction of Uzi-toting Chinese soldiers along the way, as well as the various cadres of bureaucrats unused to dealing with outsiders. Guess I'd prefer to deal with nature any day, rather than the vagaries of human nature.

Norm: What were the most harrowing experiences you encountered during your journey?

Brandon: It's a toss-up. This entire journey was chock-full of uncertainty. The spectre of running out of food and water was a daily concern. Where would we stay? Would our bodies be able to physically able to make 1000 kilometers at 12-17,000 foot altitude for 40 days?

But I'd have to say that the most singularly harrowing experience we had was being shot at by Chinese soldiers as we overlooked Mt. Everest from a hilltop in Tingri. What do you do?

As second runner-up, I'd nominate that morning where we awoke to a blinding blizzard and realized that we still needed to press on.

Norm: What impressed you most of all about the trip?

Brandon: First, we were impressed by the unexpected generosity of the Tibetan people. Originally we packed a tent, stove and fuel for the trek, expecting to be totally on our own along the way. However, after our first night spent camping in a potato patch, we were taken-in by local villagers who shared their meager possessions, including yak butter tea and a warm spot around their fire. We really grew to look forward to these human exchanges, even though we had to rely on clumsy sign-language and a limited phrasebook to communicate. Fortunately, we started to run into former monks who'd received training in Nepal and still spoke limited English.

Through talking to them, we became better informed about the hardships of living in Tibet today under the Chinese Communist occupation. We learned that Tibetans are prevented from making pilgrimages along the same route that we trekked into Nepal, as they've done for centuries.

So the trip for us became more than just an "adventure" trek. It became a political statement. If we could make their trek as pilgrims, we'd show to the Chinese that it could be done, even by Westerners, without disrupting the geo-political balance of power.

In fact, on the trek's conclusion, we presented a set of prayer flags to the king of Nepal's personal representative at the palace with the hope that the king would fly them as a symbol of solidarity with the Tibetan Buddhists.

Finally, we were impressed by the unwavering faith shown by many of the Tibetans. At night, in the dark stillness of their homes, we shared photos of His Holiness the Dalai Lama with them that we had secreted into the country. Gingerly holding the photo, they touched it to the foreheads of the members of their family, blessing them. Then drawing back several layers of curtains, they reverently placed it in their private altar beside other statues and holy instruments.

After over 40 years of oppression and death, could we still be so patient or retain so much faith?

Norm: If you had to do it all over again in 2004, would you still jump at the opportunity? As a follow up, would you advise anyone else to follow in your footsteps and what are the possible dangers they may encounter today?

Brandon: Frankly, no. This trek is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From what I've read since then, and I receive Tibetan news every day now, the country has vastly changed especially Lhasa. As inundated as it was then with Chinese settlers, solders and foreign culture, it is even more so today. Now, they're in the process of completing a railroad line into Lhasa from western China, so the transformation will be accelerating, the assimilation complete. The world saw the same effect in Inner Mongolia and Manchuria with the arrival of the railroad.

With that said, I'd love to return, perhaps to the more remote Mustang region this time, far removed from the propaganda tours. Of course this is assuming I would be granted a visa. Writing this book has certainly made that possibility more remote&

However, I would advise readers to explore any part of the world that interests them by walking. There is nothing so satisfying as discovering a culture one-step-at-a-time. This is a traditional way of exploration which creates total immersion in a culture: its food, history, art, architecture, people, language and nature. I like to think of it as a walking meditation, too. You place your body on "auto-pilot" and travel outside, while traveling within.

Walking across Tibet was the beginning of this, my latest passion.

Norm: How would you describe the relationship with your wife after the trip? Reading the book, I noticed there were some tense moments between you both during the adventure.

Brandon: I really admire Cheryl's courage and willingness to take a chance. Traveling with daily hardship, uncertainty, and often life-threatening situations, will put any relationship to the test. Fortunately ours survived and this experience provided an even stronger foundation. If we could survive that, why, we could survive anything.

Norm: Did you keep a daily journal while you were travelling?

Brandon: Of course. It was sometimes hard to find the energy or time at the end of one of these 14-hours days to sit down and write. But I wanted this account of our journey to be real, raw, and authenticnot some romanticized notion of adventure travel. To capture that essence (while the blisters were still fresh) was vital. Time heals all wounds, as they say, and if you wait to write about it all later you lose much of the minutiae of the moment until it becomes merely a Disney version of your memorywithout the dancing hippos, of course.

Norm: After you returned home, did you write any magazine articles about your adventure or did you lecture anywhere about it?

Brandon: I wrote magazine and newspaper articles about the experience, and would have liked to lecture about the journey and situation in Tibet. Living in Hawaii, there's always a logistical problem and cost of traveling outside the islands.

Now that the book is published, if there's great enough interest throughout North America, I would welcome the chance to talk to groups about this life-changing experience and about the Tibet we grew to appreciate.

Norm: Why did you choose the title Yak Butter Blues for your book?

Brandon: Well, as a global citizen, I was so disturbed by seeing the destruction of this ancient culture; the dismantling of temples, the corruption of monastic life; the re-education of a population where the children are prevented from learning Tibetan in schools; the removal of Tibetan food and clothing from the stores, plus the mass settlement of Han Chinese into Tibet causing Tibetans to become a minority in their country.

It is reaching the point where yak butter tea, that nourishing food that has traditionally fed and sustained a people throughout the centuries will soon be all that remains of an enlightened culture, while all the world looks away. These are the "Yak Butter Blues."

(Besides, I liked the kind of Kerouac-ian ring to it!)

Norm: Did you ever hear any news about your horse Sadhu you left behind?

Brandon: The Internet is an amazing tool. Although we wrote to his new owner, the fellow who ran the Kathmandu guesthouse, shortly after our return home, we never heard back from him. Just recently, I "Googled" the hostel and was able to reach his brother.

Sadly, Sadhu, our old friend, passed away a couple of years ago at a very ripe old age. He spent his last years in a luxury resort, but will always be remembered by us as the only Tibetan we could bring to freedom.

Norm: Have you kept in contact with anyone you may have met during your trip?

Brandon: Unfortunately not. We sent copies of some of the photos we took along the journey to families we'd met, as our way of thanking them. That's all.

Norm: How long did it take you to write the book?

Brandon: The first draft of the book was written in a few months. After that, it was revised through several drafts. Then I added the most current news on Tibet I could find, sorted through photos, and incorporated some of the simple truths which were initially planted in the mountains of Tibet and blossomed along more recent pilgrimage treks.

Norm: How are you going to market the book?

Brandon: Ah, the ultimate question! I consider this, in many ways, an extention of the journey. Perhaps, in retrospect, it is just as difficult with over 100,000 books released each year.

We're reaching out to supporters of a free Tibet, colleges and universities, libraries, adventure travelers, trekking and outdoor organizations, newspapers, international adventure magazines, Buddhist and dharma groups, Indians & Nepalese, and independent bookstores to help get the word out. Much of this has been started and we use the Internet a lot to let people know about our web site.

The national reviews so far have been excellent and I'm awaiting others from abroad. Yak Butter Blues is currently listed on Internet bookseller sites from Europe to North America to Japan and Australia/New Zealand.

I'm also writing and sending articles to related sites and creating links, especially to the vast, displaced Tibetan community, as it is their story as much as our own.

Since book promotion these days ultimately rests with the author, I'm participating in book signings and interviews to further develop interest. As I said, if I find there's a great enough interest in presentations, I might be tempted to put together some sort of North American tour. Whatja think?

Finally, after all those small moments along the trail where we felt like we owed our survival to some mysterious force, we have learned to "have faith," to trust that we were meant to have this journey and that I was meant to write this book.

I can only trust that once again we will be blessed and that our audience will find us along life's trail.

Three Places to Interact with Dolphins in Hawaii

Visitors to Hawaii frequently see dolphins from shore or on a whale-watching cruise or fishing boat. Visitors sometimes happen to be in the water snorkeling or kayaking when a pod of dolphins swims by. Some visitors even seek out dolphins, either by frequenting areas where dolphins live and play, like Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island, or by taking a boat tour that frequents areas where dolphins live and play.

If however, you would like to guarantee up-close dolphin interaction you can pay for the privilege at three places in Hawaii.

1. Dolphin Quest on the Big Island

Pros:
Children 5 years and up can participate. Several programs to choose from.
Cons:
No actual 'swimming' with dolphins. The Dolphin Quest Program on the Big Island is located at the Hilton Waikoloa Village hotel. You do not have to be a guest at the hotel to participate in or watch the dolphin programs. The program includes dolphin trivia and facts, close up examination the program's captive dolphin's body parts like teeth and tail, getting to feed the dolphins, being in the water with the dolphins, and watching them underwater with the mask. Each person also gets a few photo opportunities touching or holding a dolphin in different poses.

2. Dolphin Quest on Oahu

Pros:
Extensive program for kids 5 to 12.
Cons:
No actual 'swimming' with dolphins. The Oahu program is located at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Although the Oahu and Big Island programs are similar in theme, there are differences. The Oahu program includes many of the same aspects as the Big Island program but here kids also have an opportunity to interact with reef fish and sea turtles. Oahu also offers a program that is half as long and a little less expensive.

3. Sea Life Park on Oahu

Pros:
If your dolphin is willing, you get to hold onto his/her dorsal fin for a swim.
Cons:
Out of a 45 minute program, only 15 of it is in the water. Only for ages 13 and up. This program also includes the price of admission to Sea Life Park. It features a lot of in-depth dolphin facts and some close up dolphin interaction, plus 15 minutes in the water with the dolphins. Pictures are also available.

Where to Find Some of the Best Beaches in the World

We think that Cape Town has some of the best beaches in the world.

You can choose beaches which are on the Indian Ocean, with warm water, or those on the colder Atlantic Ocean. Neither coast is very distant from the other, so travelling between the two is easy by road or rail.

Most of the beaches, which stretch around the coastline are long with white sand. On some of the beaches like Muizenberg you'll find lifeguards, so they are safe to surf from.

Other beaches, like Boulders Beach, you'll find plenty of animals. On Boulders beach it's the African Penguins that live there. Beware, they can be rather smelly and they do bite if you get too close to them, but don't let that stop you diving into the water to swim with them. The penguins appear very tolerant of their fellow human sunbathers and are quite happy to live harmoniously with us! Let's face it, where else can you get an experience like this?

Seals and fish life abound, which in turn brings the bird life. Whilst sitting on the back verandah of the house we constantly see the more common birds such as Turns, Black-Backed Seagulls, Cormorants, but great excitement happens when the African Pelicans come to visit. Huge jumbo jets of birds, serenely floating along like the QE2 in full sail!

The African Pelicans seem to like to come to visit during the evening time at dusk, staying all night on the sand bank just across the water. It's almost as if they come for an overnight or weekend stay. Obviously like the Hilton to them.

Other visitors that we love to see on our lagoon are the Egrets, Herons and Oyster Catchers. Wonderful wading birds, all with their own characteristics, which you could sit and watch all day long, just wading up and down, dancing their flirty dances to attract the fish, or at least confuse the fish sufficiently for the bird to suddenly dip its head and peck the fish straight out of the water and into it's gullet.

Beaches with facilities, life and people, beaches without anything except for the birdlife. The choice is yours. Often you can find beaches not far away from the hubbub and find not one soul upon it, real desert island stuff.

Spectacular scenery is also the norm for Cape Town beaches. Just think of the bay of Cape Town with it's flat-topped mountain in the background. The whole of the bay is infact, one long sandy beach, stetching for miles around Table Bay.

Next time you're thinking about taking a beach holiday, take a look at Cape Town - you'll not be disappointed.

Japanese Garden of Monaco

Have you ever seen an authentic Japanese garden? Well, I had the chance of seeing the one in Monaco and was really impressed too. Wanna taste a little Japanese culture? Stepping on this ground is escaping from the real world into a fantasy land. You suddenly find yourself in a typical Japanese natural setting like the ones you see in marvelous paintings. The only thing that's missing is the fog. Instead, the Mediterranean sun reveals all minute details in a warm light.

With Japanese gardens, what you see is not all; the surface of things is the mere reflection of the psyche of an ancient culture. One really needs to be literally "cultured" in this direction to best appreciate the value of this art. (which I myself was not at the time of my visit! And it was a pity as I did not know what to look for and what to analyze better!) One can speak of a philosophy of gardening coming from the ancient Japan. Japanese gardening is an art fetched beyond the arrangements of vegetation, water and stone but is full of symbols:

* Koko - the veneration of timeless age;

* Shizen - the avoidance of the artificial;

* Yugen, or darkness - imply the mysterious or subtle;

* Miegakure - the avoidance of full expression

The perception of nature is different in the Japanese culture from that of the European one. Instead of viewing nature only as something to be subjugated and transformed according to man-made ideal of beauty, Japanese developed a close connection to nature, considering it sacred, an ally in putting food on the table and an ideal of beauty in itself. That is why the Japanese gardens are the synthesis of nature in miniature instead of correction of nature as with European gardens.

Actually, the design of Japanese gardens come from the Chinese model. The history goes back in time, around year 100BC when the emperor of China, Wu Di of the Han Dynasty established a garden that contained three small islands, mimicking the Isles of the Immortals, who were the main Taoist deities. An envoy of Japan saw it and took the idea to Japan, improving the existing Japanese practices.

The Japanese Garden of Monaco was designed at the request of Prince Rainier who thus fulfilled a desire Princess Grace had expressed during her life-time. The garden was designed by the landscape-architect Yasuo Beppu, has 7,000 square meters, its construction took 3 years and it was inaugurated in 1994.

Specific elements

* The wall (He�) with an intermediary bamboo fencing (Tak�gaki) that stands for fragility and simplicity.

* The main gate (Sh�-mon)

* The stone lanterns (T�r�) - each having special different characteristics;

* The lake (Ik�) with large swishing gold fish.

There are olive trees, cherry trees, conifers, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, a varied, rich vegetation of Mediterranean, South American, Australia, African and Asian origin, pruned according to the Japanese tradition.

Walking in the crowded Monaco, with all its stone, steel and glass, you can find in the Japanese Garden a peaceful, green oasis where even the great number of tourists pass unnoticed, wandering on the winding paths, through the thicket of the garden.

Maples for Autumn Colour

As the weather cools in late summer and the days shorten noticeably so the deciduous trees and shrubs begin to withdraw chlorophyll from their leaves in preparation for the winter shutdown. With less of that vital green pigment to mask them, the other colours within the leaves begin to show through. While the best of the autumn color may be over for this year, the coming winter months are the time to consider how best to prepare for next years autumn glory.

When it comes to the most vibrant tones, the genus Acer, the maples, includes many sterling contributors. Most of the 150-odd species of maples are deciduous trees, though some are shrubby and a few are evergreen. Acer is primarily a temperate northern hemisphere genus, ranging from around 59�N southwards to the mountains of the subtropics. With the exception of a few Eurasian species, principally the Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) and the Sycamore Maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), most of our garden maples are derived from Asian and North American species.

Maples do flower, but apart from a few with showy tassel-like blooms, most are grown solely as foliage plants, And while the thrust of this article is about autumn colour, many of the best autumn maples are also excellent spring and summer foliage plants.

Of course, getting good autumn colours depends greatly on the climate and the shades vary from year to year even in districts known for their autumn foliage. Generally the best colours develop during a prolonged autumn with warm, still days and cool but not freezing nights. Soon after the first frosts strike the last leaves fall.

Although most maples colour to some extent in autumn, the following species and their cultivars are readily available and among the brightest and most reliable.

Acer buergerianum
Trident Maple
This 10-12 m tall, round-headed tree eastern China and Japan gets its common name from the leaves, which usually have three lobes. The leaves are small and primarily red in autumn, with tints of orange and yellow.

Acer cappadocicum
Caucasian Maple
Found from the Caucasus to northern India, broad-crowned, 15-20m tall tree is best known for its bright golden yellow autumn foliage. Cultivars include 'Aureum', with yellow foliage in spring and autumn, and 'Rubrum', which has bright red young stems and spring leaves.

Acer davidii
Snakebark Maple
Best known for its white-striped and flecked green to purple bark, this 15 m tall Chinese species has 3-lobed or unlobed leaves that often colour brilliantly in red, gold and orange tones before falling. 'George Forrest' is a large-leaved cultivar.

Acer griseum
Paperbark Maple
Again, best known for its bark, which is warm brown and peeling, the foliage of this 5-10 m tall Chinese tree turns bright red in autumn. Because of the red-brown bark, the foliage colour can seem muted and is perhaps best seen at a distance where the colour of the whole tree can be appreciated.

Acer japonicum
Full-moon Maple
This slow-growing Japanese native is a small tree with tiered branches and 7-11-lobed leaves that can be almost round in some forms. The autumn colour is a combination of bright red and yellow on a green background. The Fernleaf Full-moon Maple, 'Aconitifolium', has very finely divided foliage reminiscent of aconite leaves.

The Golden Full-moon Maple (Acer japonicum var. aureum) has rounded lime green spring leaves that become yellow as they mature then turn golden and red in autumn. It is now more properly known as Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum'.

Acer palmatum
Japanese Maple
Everyone knows the beautiful Japanese maple with its seemingly endless range of cultivars in every imaginable leaf shape and colour. Originally found in Japan and Korea, it has been highly refined and developed by both Japanese and Western gardeners.

Regardless of its preference for cool, humid conditions and a tendency to develop die-back, the Japanese maple is nearly everyone's favourite small tree. The autumn foliage colour of the purple- or red-leaved forms is usually just a more intense shade of the summer colour, while those with green to pale gold leaves develop shades of red, orange, gold and yellow.

For autumn colour consider: 'Bloodgood', deep red; 'Aureum', deep gold; 'Beni Kagami', bright red; 'Hessei', red; 'Dissectum', bright orange; 'Dissectum Atropurpureum', red; 'Linearilobum Atropurpureum', bronze; and 'Linearilobum Rubrum' bright red.

Acer platanoides
Norway Maple
Found from northern Europe to the Caucasus, the Norway maple is a strong-trunked, round-headed tree to 30 m tall, with 5-lobed leaves up to 18 cm wide. While the species has deep green leaves that rarely develop much colour before turning brown and falling, some of the cultivars offer brighter hues. 'Schwedleri', in particular, is a purple-green form that often reddens intensely in autumn. 'Goldsworth Purple' can develop similar tones.

Acer rubrum
Red, Scarlet or Swamp Maple
Native to the eastern United States, this fast-growing 20 m tall tree has 3-5-lobed leaves up to 10 cm wide that colour well in the autumn, developing intense red and gold tones. This species is occasionally tapped for its syrup. 'Columnare' is a broadly columnar cultivar, not to be confused with A. platanoides 'Columnare'. 'Red Sunset' has particularly good autumn foliage.

Acer saccharinum
Silver Maple
Often confused with the sugar maple because of their similar botanical names, the Silver Maple is found over much of eastern North America, grows quickly to around 40m tall and has an open crown. Its large leaves have silvery undersides and are red, orange or gold in autumn.

Sugar Maple
This species, widespread in North America, is both a timber tree and the source of maple syrup, which makes it the most commercially important maple. As it was the pattern for the maple leaf on the Canadian flag you might think it would have red autumn leaves. Well, sometimes it does, but it is very variable; sometimes red, other years orange, gold or combinations of colours.

Acer tataricum
Tatarian Maple
Found over much of the temperate northern hemisphere outside Europe, this 10m tall tree has rounded, toothed leaves that turn vivid shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn. The Amur Maple (Acer tataricum ssp. ginnala), from Siberia, northern China and northern Japan, is shrubby, extremely tolerant of wind and cold and has red autumn foliage. It used to be classified as Acer ginnala, and is often still sold under that name.

Cultivation tips

Except for a few species, maples are generally very hardy. They prefer a deep, well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of humus. For the best autumn tones plant in a sunny position but try to provide good wind protection, at least for young plants and Japanese maples, or the foliage may burn or fall before it has a chance to colour well.

Maples respond well to light winter pruning when young and are best shaped to a fairly round crown on a sturdy trunk. Some, such as Acer palmatum, tend to be fairly shrubby with low forking and these are best left to develop naturally.

Even though the exact autumn shades are difficult to predict and will vary from year to year, you won't go far wrong with maples. They're beautiful enough in any season to forgive them their vagaries.

Did you know?

It takes around 43 litres of Acer saccharum sap to produce 1 litre of maple syrup. A good sized sugar maple yields around 50 litres of sap and during the processing into syrup the sugar concentration rises from 2% to 66%. No wonder it's so sweet, but what a flavour!
